23 killed in Egypt attack

In Egypt, gunmen have attacked a convoy of Coptic Christians south of Cairo. 23 people have been killed and 25 others have been wounded.

G-7 talks open in Sicily

The leaders from the Group of Seven industrialized democracies are meeting today in Sicily. The meeting is expected to be contentious as it is the first G-7 summit for US President Donald Trump. Trump views global warming skeptically and has called for protectionist trade policies. European Council President Donald Tusk is also attending today’s summit: “There’s no doubt that this will be the most challenging G7 summit in years. It is no secret that leaders who are meeting today sometimes have very different positions on topics such as climate change and trade.”

Trump pushes allies for more funding

The G-7 summit in Taormina follows a NATO summit in Brussels where Donald Trump said that most allies had to increase their financial support for NATO:
“I have been very, very direct is saying that NATO members must finally contribute their fair share and meet their financial obligations.”

Trump son-in-law focus of FBI probe

Back in the United States, the Washington Post is reporting that US intelligence agencies are investigating Trump’s aide and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Kushner reportedly met with the Russian ambassador to the US last December and with a Russian bank official that is close to the Kremlin and who is on a US sanctions list.
Matt Zapotzky is a reporter at the Washington Post: “He’s not accused of particular wrongdoing right now, certainly not charged with a crime, but he’s become a significant focus in this broad investigation of possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.”

More arrests following Manchester bomb attack

British police have arrested an eighth person in connection with Monday’s suicide bomb attack on a pop concert in Manchester, which killed 22 people. Police and the security services are investigating possible links between militant Islamist groups and the bomber, Salman Abedi. The British-born son of Libyan parents, he was known to hold radical views.
