London tube blast treated as terrorism

British officials say an explosion on a tube train in south-west London is being treated as terrorism. 18 people have been taken to hospital in the wake of the blast which happened at Parsons Green station. The ambulance service says none of the injuries appear to be serious or life-threatening. Pictures from the scene showed a white container on fire inside a carrier bag. Eye witnesses said there was panic as alarmed passengers rushed to get off the train. Armed police officers and emergency services are at the scene. In a statement, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the city "will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism."

N Korea fires missile over Japan

North Korea has fired a ballistic missile across Japan, creating fresh tensions in the region after Pyongyang's recent nuclear test. South Korea's military said the missile reached an altitude of nearly 800 kilometres and travelled 3,700 kilometres before landing in the sea off Hokkaido. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe: "we absolutely cannot accept these provocations. I call for an emergency UN Security Council meeting. The international community needs to come together and send a clear message to North Korea that it's threatening world peace with its actions."

Amnesty cites evidence of Myanmar village burnings

Amnesty International says it has evidence that Myanmar's security forces have burned dozens of Rohingya Muslim villages. It's urged the government to give aid agencies access to Rakhine state. The army says its campaign is against Rohingya militants. Amnesty spokesman Olof Blomqvist: “we've spoken to dozens of eye witnesses and they all describe a very similar pattern where you basically have a mix of usually security forces and vigilante groups who show up to a village, often just storm in and fire completely at random as desperate people try to flee. Once the village begins to clear, the military and security forces light houses on fire and essentially burn whole villages to the ground."

Cassini prepares to end Saturn mission

The Cassini space probe to Saturn is about to end its 13 year mission. It will destroy itself by plunging into the ringed planet's atmosphere. Cassini, which is the first spacecraft to orbit the planet, will continue to transmit data until the final moment. Scientists are hoping to gain new information on the chemical composition of Saturn's gases.
