High turnout in Iraqi Kurdistan vote

Kurds in Northern Iraq have been celebrating after a referendum on independence for the region. Turnout has been estimated at 72 percent, and the result is expected to be strongly in favour of independence. However, the result is not binding and the ballot was strongly opposed by the Iraqi government in Baghdad and by neighbouring countries with their own Kurdish populations. The US State Department said it was disappointed the referendum went ahead, and warned it could destabilise the region.

Macron to present his vision for a unified Europe

The French President Emmanuel Macron is set to outline proposals for the EU reforms that would deepen integration once the United Kingdom has left the bloc. In a speech in Paris this afternoon, Macron is expected to push forward his vision for the next phase - a Europe that presents a unified front on defence, migration, and the economy.

Palestinian gunman kills three Israelis

Three Israeli security officers have been killed and another wounded - in an attack by a Palestinian gunman at a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank. The attacker was shot by police and later died. This came as the US envoy, Jason Greenblatt, arrived in Jerusalem on a mission to revive peace talks.

White House must disclose email use

The leaders of a US Congressional Oversight Committee have written to the White House demanding details of everyone in the Trump administration who has used private email accounts to discuss government business. During his election campaign Donald Trump repeatedly called for the imprisonment of his rival Hillary Clinton, for using her personal email when she was secretary of state. At least six of Trump's closest advisors have reportedly breached the rules, including his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

North Korea’s rhetoric escalates

South Korea has called for a stern but cool-headed response to what it described as continued provocations to North Korea. Earlier, the White House condemned North Korea's claim that it had the right to shoot down US bombers, even if they were outside North Korean airspace. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders described US policy this way: "It's never appropriate for a country to shoot down another country's aircraft when it's over international waters. Our goal is still the same, we continue to seek the peaceful denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula."

The ‘Alternative Nobel’ winners announced

This year's Right Livelihood Award - often described as the Alternative Nobel Prize - has been shared by a human rights lawyer from India, an investigative journalist from Azerbaijan, and a blind disabilities campaigner from Ethiopia.
