Anti-nuclear arms group wins Nobel Prize

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Berit Reiss-Anderson is the chairperson of the Norwegian Nobel Committee - she called on nuclear-armed states to initiate talks for the elimination of such weapons: "This year's peace prize is therefore also a call upon these states to initiate serious negotiations with a view to the gradual, balanced, and carefully monitored elimination of the almost 15,000 nuclear weapons in the world."

Trump ‘might abandon Iran deal’

Russia has said the Iran nuclear deal should be preserved in its current form. Earlier, President Trump said Iran hadn't lived up to the spirit of the agreement, which was signed two years ago with world powers. He said he was planning to annul it next week... which could open the way for the US Congress to impose sanctions on Iran.

Catalan parliament to defy Spanish ban

Catalonia's parliament plans to meet on Monday, despite a Spanish constitutional court order suspending the session. The Assembly could make a unilateral declaration of independence, something Madrid strongly opposes. Meanwhile, the chief of Catalonia's police force is appearing in court in Madrid, on suspicion of inciting rebellion against the state. His force has been accused of failing to protect national police from protestors, before last weekend's disputed independence referendum.

NRA urges new rules for ‘rapid fire’ tools

The US National Rifle Association is calling for more regulation of so-called bump-stocks - devices which can make a semi-automatic rifle perform like a machine gun. Investigators suspect that the Las Vegas shooter used a bump-stock to modify some of his weapons. Republicans have said they would consider banning the tool, despite years of resisting any gun control.

Storm Nate kills 22 in Central America

Tropical Storm Nate has killed at least 22 people in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras. It's now moving north towards the US. A state of emergency has been declared in the Central American nations, where more than 20 people are missing. It has caused heavy rain, landslides, and flooding.

The Weather
