38 killed in Baghdad attacks

Iraqi officials say up to 38 people have been killed and over 100 wounded in a double suicide bombing in Baghdad. The attacks happened in a square in the city centre where large crowds of construction workers gather to find work every morning. It's the second suicide attack in the capital in three days. So far no group has claimed responsibility but the Islamic State terror group has claimed similar attacks in the past.

Moscow criticises Washington over Iran deal

The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow will not support attempts by Washington to change the Iran nuclear deal. Lavrov was speaking days after President Donald Trump said he would approve sanctions relief for Iran for the last time in order to give Washington and its European allies a chance to fix what he called the "terrible flaws" of the 2015 accord. Lavrov says an amended agreement would be unacceptable for Iran and that Moscow will work to keep the existing one which saw Tehran agree to curb its nuclear activities in return for the suspension of sanctions.

Stricken tanker leaves oil slick off China

An oil slick several kilometres long has been sighted off China's east coast, where an Iranian oil tanker sank on Sunday. The vessel caught fire earlier this month after colliding with a cargo ship. 32 crew members were on board the tanker. 3 bodies have been recovered.

Jakarta stock exchange mezzanine floor collapses

In Indonesia, a ceiling has collapsed at the Jakarta stock exchange. According to reports dozens of people have been injured. Authorities say the incident was due to an accident and not an explosion.

Candlelight vigil for mudslide victims in California

In the US, thousands of people have attended a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to the 20 people who were killed when mudslides hit Santa Barbara County last Tuesday. County Sheriff Bill Brown says search and rescue operations have ended: "we transitioned from a search and rescue operation to a search and recovery mission. This decision was not made lightly. This transition was only authorised after extensive searches for the identified missing persons were conducted at their last known location through the debris field all the way to the Pacific Ocean."

President Trump says he's not a racist

President Trump has denied being a racist following a row about derogatory and highly offensive comments he reportedly made about Africa, Haiti and El Salvador during a meeting on immigration at the White House. Trump has denied using obscene language. But Democrat Senator Dick Durbin, who was at the meeting, said that the president had used "hate-filled, vile and racist" slurs.
