Syria blames Israel for airfield attack

A Syrian military airbase, close to the city of Homs, has been hit by missiles. Syrian state media said several people were killed. The US has denied any responsibility for the raid, which came hours after President Trump said Bashar al-Assad would pay a big price for a suspected chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma. Syria and Russia have accused Israel of being behind the strike on the airbase... Steve Fish is a regional analyst: "Well, it has the look of an Israeli attack - and you can see why Israel might want to attack right now, because Trump has recently said that he wants to pull out and when the Israelis asked him to please stay he's saying no, he definitely wants to leave. He seems adamant about it." The alleged chemical attack in Douma is due to be discussed by the UN Security Council later today.

Hungary’s Orban wins a third term

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Victor Orban, has won a clear election victory - securing a third term in office. His right-wing Fidesz party has won about two thirds of the seats. Orban told supporters in Budapest his triumph would ensure the security of Hungary.

North Korea ‘to discuss nuclear programme’

US officials say North Korea has agreed to discuss denuclearisation, when the leaders of the two countries meet at a planned summit. Separately, China says it's banned the export to North Korea of some items of potential dual-use in weapons of mass destruction.

Chinese bank interested in Austrian subsidiary

The world's biggest bank - the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China - has expressed interest in setting up a subsidiary bank in Vienna. Austria's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz met earlier today with the bank's chairman in Beijing. Kurz is accompanying President Alexander van der Bellen on a state visit to China.

South Korean prosecutors formally charge ex-president

The former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has been indicted for corruption, just days after his successor was jailed on similar charges. Prosecutors say Lee is guilty of bribery, embezzlement, tax evasion and abuse of power. He has dismissed the evidence against him as fabrication.
