Abdeslam given 20 year jail sentence

The only surviving suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks Salah Abdeslam has been found guilty of attempted murder over shots fired at police when they tried to capture him in Belgium two years ago. A court in Brussels has sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Abdeslam is currently in a French jail awaiting trial for his role in the Paris attacks which were carried out by the Islamic State group. Philippe Vansteenkiste is from V-Europe - an association of people affected by terrorism: "it's very important for us to be here today because all victims have the right to know the truth and also to have justice. For us, this is part of the great impact of all the terror-related events between Paris and Brussels. It's a piece of the puzzle and we have the right to know what happened."

Karadzic starts appeal against genocide conviction

The former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is starting an appeal against 10 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity carried out during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a UN tribunal in 2016. The prosecution argues that his sentence should be increased to life.

S Korea stops broadcasting propaganda to N Korea

South Korea has stopped broadcasting propaganda via loudspeakers along its border with North Korea. The move comes ahead of top-level negotiations between the neighbours later this week. Seoul says turning them off will help set the tone for Friday's talks.

Bloomberg pledges millions for Paris climate pact

The former Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg says he's prepared to pay 4.5 million dollars to cover the US's financial commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement for the current year. Last year, President Donald Trump pulled the country out of the pact. Bloomberg told CBS why he was doing it: "America made a commitment and as an American if the government's not going to do it......We all have responsibilities and I'm able to do it, so yes, I'm going to send them a cheque for the money that America had promised."

UN urges Iran nuclear deal parties to stick to it

The top UN disarmament official Izumi Nakamitsu has urged the parties to the Iran nuclear deal not to abandon it. The appeal comes as the French President Emmanuel Macron prepares to visit President Donald Trump in Washington. Macron is also urging Trump to stick to the agreement, saying there was no better option. Trump has threatened to abandon the deal which limits Iran's nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.
