10 killed by van driver in Toronto

Canadian police are investigating what they believe was a deliberate attack on pedestrians by a van driver in the city of Toronto. 10 people were killed and 15 injured. A 25-year old suspect has been arrested. Officials say he was not previously known to the authorities and that the motive is unclear. It's believed he acted alone and was not associated with any organised terror group. Ralph Goodale is the Federal Public Safety Minister: "the events that happened on the street behind us are horrendous. But they do not appear to be connected in any way to national security based on the information available at this time."

Iran warns Washington over nuclear deal

The President of Iran has given the US a stark warning not to withdraw from the international nuclear deal. Hassan Rouhani said Washington would face "severe" consequences if President Trump carries through with his threat to pull out of the accord in which Tehran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of sanctions. Trump is expected to discuss the issue on Tuesday with the French President Emmanuel Macron who's just started a state visit to the US.

Armenia's Prime Minister steps down after protests

In Armenia, Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan has resigned after nearly 2 weeks of protests. Opposition supporters had accused him of trying to cling to power after serving the maximum 10 years as the country's president. Giorgi Gogia from Human Rights Watch says his critics had several grievances: "you know - after 10 years in power - there were accumulating grievances, accumulating problems. Among them was the lack of democratic legitimacy of the leadership: election manipulation, vote buying."

18 killed in karaoke bar fire in China

Police in China say a man has been detained in connection with a fire in a karaoke bar which killed 18 people. The blaze in Guangdong province broke out just after midnight in a three-storey building. Officials are treating the case as suspected arson.

Elections in Greenland

Voters in the self-governing Danish territory of Greenland are going to the polls today. A majority of the 56,000 population are reported to be in favour of breaking away from Denmark at some point in the future but other issues such as the economy and poor housing have dominated the campaign.
