US presidential election day arrives
Polling day for the next US president has arrived after the longest and most expensive election campaign in US history. Republican candidate John McCain who is behind in public opinion polls has appealed to his supporters not to give up: “Stand up to defend our country from its enemies. Stand up, stand up stand up and fight. America is worth fighting for. Nothing is inevitable here. We never give up. We never quit.” Democrat candidate Barack Obama, at his last rally in Virginia, repeated his message of change: “In just one more day we have the opportunity to honour all those quiet heroes ....we can bring change to America to make sure their work is honoured, that's what we're fighting for.” Both candidates are continuing campaigning even as voting starts.

Obama reveals death of grandmother
Senator Barack Obama has said his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who largely raised him as a child, had died of cancer on Sunday aged 86. He honoured her as a woman of extraordinary strength and humility, and said she had died peacefully in her sleep with his sister at her side.

Palin cleared of abuse of office
On the eve of the election, a second investigation has found that Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin did not abuse her power as governor of Alaska. An earlier investigation found Mrs Palin had abused her office over pressure exerted to fire her former brother-in-law.

Votes also for Senate and House
US voters are also deciding a third of seats in the Senate. In the House of Representatives all 435 seats are up for election. Pollsters have said Democrats could capture large majorities in both houses.

UN secretary general to east Africa
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to travel to East Africa as part of the effort to end the crisis in eastern Congo. He is to hold talks with Rwandan president Paul Kagame and with Joseph Kabila, president of Congo, where around a quarter of a million people have been displaced by fighting between government troops and rebel militias.

Al Qaeda media man given life sentence
A man accused of being Osama Bin Laden's media secretary has been sentenced to life in prison by a jury of nine military officers at Guantanamo Bay. Ali Hamza al-Bahlul refused to present a defence during his trial, saying it was a farce.

Iran minister faces impeachment
Iran’s interior minister Ali Kordan faces an impeachment hearing in parliament today after he admitted he faked a degree from Oxford University in Britain. The minister is seen as close to president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
