Seehofer offers to quit over migrant policy

The head of Bavaria's state government, Markus Söder, has said his CSU party does not want to risk the stability of Germany's coalition government, and that he hopes it's still possible to reach a compromise over migration policy. This comes after the head of the CSU, Horst Seehofer, threatened to resign as Interior Minister in the early hours of the morning - something Söder said came as a surprise. Seehofer wants tougher policies on migration. Further talks between the CSU and Chancellor Angela Merkel's CDU will take place later today.

Left-winger set to become Mexico’s president

In a major political shift in Mexico, the left-wing candidate Andres Manuel López Obrador looks set to win the country's presidential election with over 53 percent of the vote. Yesterday's elections followed one of the country's deadliest campaigns in decades - with more than 130 political candidates and party workers killed. López Obrador says he wants to ensure Mexicans do not have to migrate out of economic necessity, and that one of his main priorities is to tackle corruption: "Corruption is not a cultural phenomenon, but the result of a decadent political regime. We are absolutely convinced that this evil is the main cause of social and economic inequality. And also that corruption is to blame for the violence in our country."

Guterres visits Rohingya refugee camps

The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, says he's heard horrific accounts of killing and rape from Rohingya refugees who fled Myanmar. During a visit to the camps in Bangladesh, which house seven hundred thousand refugees, Guterres said the Rohingyas want justice, and to return home in safety.

EU warns against car tariffs

The EU has warned the United States that almost 300 billion dollars of its own exports could be targeted, if it imposes tariffs on cars from Europe. President Donald Trump has the sector in his sights after applying additional levies on the imports of steel and aluminium from the EU.

North Korea’s nuclear program could be dismantled in ‘a year’

The US National Security Advisor John Bolton says he believes the main part of North Korea's nuclear weapons programmes could be dismantled within a year. Several experts have predicted that the complete process would take far longer. Meanwhile, a North Korean official in charge of economic policy is visiting China, amid speculation that Pyongyang and Beijing are expanding their cooperation. Last month, Beijing suggested relaxing some of the UN sanctions against Pyongyang.
