Sie brachte ein profundes Wissen von britischer Folkmusik mit, als sie 1969 Sängerin der Gruppe Fairport Convention wurde, die auf bis dahin ungeahnte Weise traditionelle Musik mit Rock zusammenführte. Mit ihrer eigenen Band Fotheringay und mit sehr persönlichen Soloalben wie "The Northstar Grassman & The Ravens" (1971) profilierte sich Sandy Denny als bedeutende Songautorin.
