Manchmal sind Kategorisierungen gar nicht so einfach: Sind das nun Popsongs, die von Jazzmusikern gespielt werden, oder doch (auch) Jazzkompositionen in einem Popkontext? Wie dem auch sei: Im September 1979 gastiert die kanadische Singer/Songwriterin Joni Mitchell mit einer hochkarätigen Band in der Santa Barbara Bowl in Kalifornien.
Geboten werden einerseits ältere Hits wie "Woodstock", andererseits Kompositionen der gerade veröffentlichten Zusammenarbeit Mitchells mit dem legendären Jazzbassisten Charles Mingus. In der Begleitband spielen Kapazunder wie Saxofonist Michael Brecker, Gitarrist Pat Metheny oder Bassist Jaco Pastorius. Von dieser luxuriösen Entourage beflügelt, demonstriert Joni Mitchell einmal mehr, dass sich mit der Qualität ihrer Song-Poesie nur Kollegen wie Leonard Cohen oder Bob Dylan messen können. Ein Beitrag zum heutigen Weltfrauentag.
