Wie in der heutigen Zeit wurde im Theater des späten 17. Jahrhunderts in London kaum musiziert. Das vorherrschende Genre im England jener Zeit war die Masque, ein Spektakel aus Musik, Tanz und gesprochenen und gesungenen Texten. Diese Form wurde erst allmählich durch die Anfang des Jahrhunderts in Italien entstandene, durchkomponierte Oper entthront.
