Trump to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital
US president Donald Trump is expected to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel today, despite warnings that it could jeopardise peace efforts in the region. The status of Jerusalem has long been a source of tension between Israel and the Palestinians, who claim the eastern part of the city as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the recognition of Jerusalem is a red line for Muslims. Nabil Shaath is a senior advisor to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He says President Trump can no longer claim to be promoting peace. “That totally destroys any chance that he will play a role as an honest broker. That takes away honest, takes away broker, takes away chaperone of peace, takes away the deal of the century and makes them beyond us, gone into the files of history.”
Three charged with murder of Maltese journalist
Three men have been charged in Malta with the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The 53 year old was killed in an explosion as she drove out of her home near the town of Mosta in October. She was known for her blog targeting Maltese politicians, whom she accused of corruption.
Russia banned from 2018 Winter Olympics
The International Olympic Committee has banned Russia from competing in next year's Winter Olympics in South Korea. It follows revelations of systematic manipulation of the anti-doping system during the 2014 games in the Russian city of Sochi. Russia denies the allegations and has reacted angrily to the ban. IOC President Thomas Bach said Russia's actions had been hugely damaging. “The report clearly lays out an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sports. As an athlete myself, I’m feeling very sorry for all the clean athletes.”
Billionaire populist sworn in as Czech PM
Billionaire businessman Andrej Babis is being sworn in as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic this afternoon at a ceremony at Prague castle. The populist and anti-establishment leader, who has been compared to Donald Trump and Silvio Berlusconi, has promised to stem immigration and fight corruption. His ANO party won elections in October with around 30 percent of the vote. After failing to find coalition partners, Babis will now head a minority government.
Man charged over plot to kill the British leader
A man has appeared in court in London, charged with plotting to kill British Prime Minister Theresa May. Prosecutors told the Westminster Magistrates Court that the man planned to detonate a bomb outside the Prime Minister's residence in Downing Street London and then attack May in the ensuing chaos.
Thousands flee a devastating wildfire in California
Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes in the US state of California, as a huge wildfire threatens the city of Ventura, north of Los Angeles. Firefighters are battling to contain the blaze, which has destroyed more than 150 buildings across 200 square kilometres. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in the region.
The weather
Generally sunny conditions have been forecast for this afternoon, with some fog lingering in parts of Upper and Lower Austria. Top temperatures will range from 0 to 10 degrees.
