EU ministers reach agreement on car emissions

EU environment ministers have agreed to seek a 35% reduction in car emissions by 2030. After 13 hours of negotiations, they reached a compromise over what carbon dioxide limits to impose on European car manufacturers. The final rules will be worked out in talks involving the European Parliament and the European Commission. The deal comes two days after a UN climate report which called for rapid action to contain global warming.

Trump to decide soon on new UN ambassador

The US President Donald Trump says he will decide who will become the new US ambassador to the United Nations in the coming weeks. In a surprise announcement Nikki Haley said she would step down at the end of the year. Amid speculation over her reasons, Haley told reporters she wasn't intending to run for the presidency in 2020: "I will say this for all of you who are going to ask about 2020. No, I am not running for 2020. I can promise you what I'll be doing is campaigning for this one, so I look forward to supporting the president in the next election."

IMF warns of new risk to global economy

The IMF has warned there's a real risk of a new and widespread shock to the world economy. It says governments were rejecting global solutions in favour of nationally-based policies. IMF head Christine Lagarde: "we need to work together to de-escalate and resolve the current trade disputes. And whilst it is tempting to be a bit depressed about this perspective, I am actually hopeful because there is a clear appetite to improve and expand trade."

Suspect arrested over Bulgarian journalist's murder

Officials in Bulgaria say a 21-year old suspect has been arrested in Germany over the rape and murder of the investigative journalist Viktoria Marinova. She was attacked whilst jogging in a park on Saturday in the northern city of Ruse. Investigators say at this stage, they do not believe there was a link between the murder and her work.

6 killed in floods in Spain

In Spain, at least 6 people have been killed and several are reported missing in heavy rain and flash flooding on the island of Mallorca. Images posted on social media showed cars being swept along streets by torrents of water. The Spanish weather agency said 22 centimetres of rain had fallen in four hours yesterday evening.

Evacuations as Hurricane Michael approaches the US

Up to half a million people have been urged to evacuate their homes in the south eastern United States ahead of Hurricane Michael which has been upgraded to a category 4 storm. States of emergency have been declared in Florida and parts of Georgia and Alabama. At least 13 people are reported to have died in Central America over the weekend as a result of storm rains and floods.
