Ihre Eltern stammen aus Haiti, sie selbst wurde in New York geboren und hat schließlich in New Orleans ihre Wahlheimat und die Kultur ihres Herzens gefunden, welche über das gemeinsame afrikanische und frankophone Erbe eine direkte Brücke schlägt zwischen den USA und Haiti. Leyla McCalla, Jahrgang 1985, spielt Cello und Banjo; sie singt alte Traditionals, als wären sie eben erst komponiert worden, und eigene Songs, in denen drei Jahrhunderte schwarzer Geschichte mitschwingen. Wie schon ihr Solodebut von 2013 ist auch ihr zweites Album "A Day for the Hunter, A Day For The Prey" leichtfüßig und tiefgründig, elegant und roh, spirituell entrückt und erdig zugleich.
