Global warming “man-made”

A landmark report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says there is 95% certainty that human activity is the main cause of global warming. The report is the clearest statement yet from top scientists that the planet’s warming is not part of natural cycles. It warns that sea levels are likely to rise by over 80 centimetres by the end of this century with an increase in extreme weather events. Michel Jarraud from the World Meteorological Association was among scientists presenting the report in Stockholm. “It should serve as yet another wake-up call that our activities today will have a profound impact on society not only for us but for many generations to come.”

Agreement on UN resolution on Syria

The five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council have reached agreement on a draft resolution to eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons, after intense negotiations between Russia and the United States. Any use of military force in case of non-compliance by Syria would require a second UN resolution. Meanwhile a draft agreement from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons says its experts could inspecting Syria's stockpile by Tuesday next week.

West welcomes “new tone” from Iran

The United States and European countries have welcomed what they called a significant change in tone from Iran over its nuclear programme, at talks at the United Nations. Negotiations between Iran and six world powers are scheduled to start in Geneva on October 15th. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran seeks recognition of its right to peaceful nuclear technology and wants tough economic sanctions lifted: “We hope to be able to make progress and at the same time making sure that there is no concern at the international level that Iran’s nuclear programme is anything but peaceful.”

Death toll rises in Balochistan

Officials in Pakistan say the death toll from Tuesday’s earthquake in Balochistan has risen to over 400. They have appealed to militant groups in the province to halt attacks they said were hampering relief efforts.

Building collapse in India

In India, dozens of people are feared trapped in rubble after a block of flats collapsed in Mumbai. Five people are known to have died. It was the third building collapse in six months in Mumbai.

Interpol alert for Lewthwaite

Interpol has issued a wanted persons alert at Kenya's request for a British woman Samantha Lewthwaite, as a possible suspect in the Nairobi shopping mall terror attack. Lewthwaite is the widow of one of four men who launched suicide attacks in London in July 2005.
