Morsi trial opens

The trial has begun in Cairo of Egypt's deposed president Mohammed Morsi on charges of inciting murder in relation to the deaths of protestors last December. In his first appearance in public since he was overthrown by the army on July 3rd, Morsi reportedly said he refused to recognise the court and remains Egypt’s legitimate president. He is on trial alongside fourteen other leading Muslim Brotherhood members. Egyptian state television says proceedings were adjourned after the defendants began chanting. The trial is to resume on January 8th. Morsi’s supporters have called for major protests.

Kenya charges four in mall attack

A court in Kenya has charged four people with terrorism offences in relation to the attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi in September in which 67 people were killed. The four suspects, believed to be Somali, pleaded not guilty.

Huge cache of looted art discovered

A collection of 1500 works by masters of modernist painting has been found in Munich in one of the largest recoveries ever of art looted by the Nazis. A report in the German news weekly Focus says the collection, including works by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall, was discovered by tax authorities over two years ago in the apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt, son of the late German art collector, Hildebrand Gurlitt. Anne Webber co-founder of the Commission for Looted Art in Europe: “The German authorities have not thought fit to publish a list and make it clear what they’ve got. And so there are hard questions to be asked of the Bavarians as to why they have not published this.”

US Saudi ties under strain

United States secretary of state John Kerry is in Saudi Arabia for talks meant to ease tensions over US policy in Syria. Saudi Arabia has been angered at the failure to act against Syrian President Bashar Assad. There are also differences over US relations with Iran.

US doctors “tortured suspects”

In the United States an investigation has concluded that doctors and psychologists working for the US military and intelligence services after the 9/11 terror attacks were involved in the torture of suspected terrorists. The defence department and the CIA have dismissed the allegations.

Kosovo elections marred by violence

Local elections in Kosovo yesterday were marred by violence in the north of the country. Reports say hardline ethnic Serbs intimidated voters and attacked a polling station.

Musharraf granted bail

A court in Pakistan has granted bail to former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in relation to charges over an army operation against militants in 2007. Musharraf has been bailed in all the cases against him and is expected to be released from house arrest.
