New lead in plane search

An Australian vessel searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has detected signals similar to those which are emitted by flight recorders. Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston - who's coordinating the search operation - said more information was needed as the aircraft itself hadn't yet been found. But he said the development was significant: "clearly this is a most promising lead. And probably in the search so far it's probably the best information that we have had."

Unrest in eastern Ukraine

Ukrainian security officials are being sent to the eastern cities of Luhansk, Donetsk and Kharkiv following the occupation of government buildings by pro-Russian groups. The government in Kiev has accused Russia of stoking tensions in the region.

Voting starts in India's election

Voters in India have started voting in the world's biggest election, with the ruling Congress party being challenged by the BJP. A new anti-corruption party, the AAP, is also contesting the elections after gaining strong support in local polls. The ballot is taking place in nine stages and will conclude on 12th May. Over 800 million people are eligible to vote.

Rwanda begins week of mourning

A week of official mourning is underway in Rwanda to mark the 20th anniversary of the country's genocide in which at least 800,000 people were killed, mostly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus. President Paul Kagame and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon lit a torch at the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre which will burn for 100 days.

Hungary's Orban declares victory

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared victory following yesterday's parliamentary election. His right-wing Fidesz party along with its ally, the Christian Democrats, got around 45%. A centre-left alliance of opposition parties won around a quarter of the vote. The far-right Jobbik party got 21%. Orban told his supporters the election result showed that Hungarians wanted to stay in the EU but with a strong national government: "we won. This was not just any old victory. We have scored a comprehensive victory - the significance of which we cannot yet fully grasp." The opposition has accused Orban of undermining democracy, saying he's reduced civil liberties and compromised the freedom of the media.

US actor Mickey Rooney dies at 93

The actor Mickey Rooney, who became one of the US's biggest film stars, has died at the age of 93. His career spanned 10 decades.
