European shares rebound after another fall in China

Shares in Europe rebounded in morning trading, despite another night of steep falls for the Chinese stock market. China's main stock exchange fell 7.6% - after losing 8.5% on Monday and causing sharp drops in markets in Europe and the United States. The sell-off is being driven by fears over China's slowing economy. Professor Ken Rogoff is the former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund: "I think that the big change is that the market had been thinking that China would just grow for ever. It wouldn´t have an ordinary recession. It wouldn´t have a slowdown. And now it´s thinking well, it´s definitely slowing down and maybe there´ll be a financial crisis. That possibility is looming and it´s making people nervous."

Calls for unified response to refugee crisis

The European Union's Commissioner for Migration has pledged a war against people smugglers and says that economic migrants will be returned home. But Dimitris Avramopoulos said tens of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict zones like Syria were entitled to be in Europe and some countries should be doing more to help them. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande have called for a unified response to the growing crisis, following talks in Berlin on Monday. The UN refugee agency says up to 3,000 people are expected to cross into Macedonia every day in the coming months.

Turkey prepares for new elections

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu a mandate to form an interim government which will lead the country into a parliamentary election. Erdogan formally called for a fresh election on Monday, in a widely anticipated move after two months of coalition talks failed to produce a working government.

“IS arrests” in Spain and Morocco

Fourteen people have reportedly been arrested in raids in Spain and Morocco in a joint operation targeting suspected recruiters for the so-called Islamic State group. They´re believed to be involved in a network to send fighters to areas of Syria and Iraq under IS control. On Friday a Moroccan man who had lived in Spain was arrested following a foiled attack on a French high-speed train. He is to appear in court in Paris this evening.

North and South Korea agree to ease tensions

Envoys from North and South Korea have reached an agreement after three days of negotiations to end tensions on the peninsula. South Korea has halted its anti-Communist propaganda broadcasts over the border, which it resumed after two South Korean soldiers were seriously injured by a landmine. The North, which initially denied planting the mine, agreed to express "regret".
