Super Tuesday wins for Clinton and Trump
The Democratic front runner Hillary Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump are both celebrating victories in seven US states on so-called Super Tuesday, the biggest day in the nomination race for the White House. Paul Glastris is editor in chief of The Washington Monthly: "75 per cent of Democrats want somebody with experience who can make the system, as it exists, work well, whereas 75 per cent or so of Republicans - and we´ve known this for months from the polling - want somebody with zero experience who wants to essentially blow the system up and create something new." Hillary Clinton´s Democrat challenger Bernie Sanders notched up four wins. The Republican Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are both vowing to fight on despite weak performances.
EU to propose emergency aid for refugees
The European Commission is to set out proposals to allow EU funds to be given directly to aid agencies working inside Europe in the same way they are used in crises outside the bloc. Greece has said it needs 500 million euros from the EU to help it cope with what the United Nations says is a looming humanitarian disaster. Border restrictions by Austria and countries along the Balkan migration route have left tens of thousands of people stranded in Greece.
President Fischer visits Cuba
President Heinz Fischer today becomes the first Austrian head of state to visit Cuba. He will meet with his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, this evening in Havana. Fischer, who's being accompanied by an Austrian business delegation, will also take part in a bi-lateral economics forum.
Spain´s Socialists seek to form a government
The Socialist party in Spain faces a vote in parliament later today to see if it can form a government, after weeks of political stalemate. The Socialists came second in December´s elections, but no party has been able to form a working coalition.
Bin Laden left $29m fortune
The United States has released what appears to be the hand-written will of the late al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden. In it, Bin Laden asked that the majority of his $29m fortune be spent on continuing al-Qaeda's operations. The letter was among documents taken in the US Special Forces raid that killed Bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011.
ISS crew members end 340-day mission
The US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko have arrived back on Earth after spending almost a year in space. Their 340-day mission on board the International Space Station is twice the length of a normal stay. Their extended tour is part of a study to examine the effects of spaceflight on the body.
The weather
A mix of sunshine and isolated showers, with rain or snow in the west by evening. Top temperatures from 4 to 12.
