UK Iraq war inquiry critical of government

The chairman of a UK inquiry into the Iraq war and the subsequent occupation, Sir John Chilcot, says Britain joined the US-led invasion before peaceful options had been exhausted. Announcing the long-awaited findings, Chilcot said the threat posed by Iraq´s weapons of mass destruction were presented with a certainty that was not justified: "Despite explicit warnings, the consequences of the invasion were underestimated. The planning and preparations for Iraq after Saddam Hussein were wholly inadequate. The government failed to achieve its stated objectives." The decision in 2003 by Prime Minister Tony Blair to commit British troops was one of the most controversial and divisive foreign policy moves of the past 50 years.

Oscar Pistorius jailed for six years

The former South African Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was facing a possible 15-year jail term for shooting Steenkamp at his home in 2013, but the judge said there were substantial and compelling circumstances to give him a lesser sentence. Defence lawyers say they will not appeal.
