Brexit Talks Resume

Brexit talks have resumed in Brussels between Britain and the European Union. The EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier today outlined which issues would be discussed during the latest round of negotiations: “Our negotiating groups will work on citizens’ rights, on the financial settlement. Our coordinators will also engage in a political dialogue on Ireland.” British negotiator David Davis said he was hopeful the two sides could reach mutually agreeable solutions: “For us it is incredibly important that we now make good progress and now it’s time to get down to work and make this a successful negotiation.”

Seoul Seeks Talks with North

South Korea is proposing its first military talks with North Korea since 2015. Seoul says the move is aimed at reducing tensions on the peninsula which have been rising in the wake of recent missile tests by the North.

Unofficial Venezuelan Poll Held

More than 7 million people in Venezuela have reportedly cast ballots in an unofficial referendum organized by the opposition against plans by President Nicolas Maduro and his supporters to re-write the country’s constitution. Monitors say a majority have rejected the plan, while Maduro has called the referendum “meaningless”: “The opposition parties have convened this internal consultation without electoral rulebooks, without prior verification, as if they are autonomous and can decide on their own.”

Tourists Flee Wildfires in Western Balkans

Around 100 tourists have been evacuated via the Adriatic Sea from coastal areas in Montenegro because of wildfires. Further north in Croatia, firefighters are trying to put out fires near Pula and Split. Wildfires are also being fought in neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina near the city of Mostar.

Four Die in Attacks in Pakistan

There have been two bomb attacks today on Pakistani troops manning the border with Afghanistan. In the first attack, a Taliban suicide bomber riding a motorcycle hit a Pakistani patrol, killing three troops and wounding eight others. A second bomb attack elsewhere on the border killed one soldier and wounded another.

PKK Attacks Turkish Troops

In southeastern Turkey, a roadside bomb exploded today wounding 17 Turkish soldiers, four of them seriously. The attack is being blamed on militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.

Jordanian Sentenced for Attack on Americans

A military court in Jordan has sentenced a Jordanian soldier to life in prison for shooting dead three US military trainers last November. The incident happened at a Jordanian air base which the United States uses for missions in nearby Syria.

US Actor Martin Landau Dead at 89

American film and television actor Martin Landau has died in Los Angeles. He was 89 years old. Landau won an Oscar for his portrayal of Dracula actor Bela Lugosi in the 1994 film “Ed Wood”. He was also nominated for Oscars for his roles in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Tucker” and Woody Allen’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors”.

Film Director George Romero Dies at 77

American film director George Romero has died in New York at the age of 77. Romero specialized in horror and zombie films and remains best known for the 1968 cult movie “Night of the Living Dead”.
