Trump apologises to Kavanaugh over ‘lies’

President Donald Trump has apologised to the newly appointed US Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh for what he described as a "campaign of lies" during the confirmation hearings. He was referring to the allegations of sexual assault which have been made against Kavanaugh, which he has denied. Trump was speaking at a ceremony at the White House: "On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure. Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation."

The UN calls for an investigation into missing journalist

The UN's human rights office has called on Turkey and Saudi Arabia to investigate the disappearance of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The reporter went into his country's consulate in Istanbul a week ago and - according to Turkish police - never came out. Turkish officials say they believe that he was murdered inside the consulate. Khashoggi is a high-profile critic of Saudi Arabia's crown prince.

IMF warns that trade tensions are slowing growth

The International Monetary Fund has warned that trade tensions between the US and China are slowing global economic growth and making the world a poorer and more dangerous place. It lowered its growth forecast to 3.7 percent for this year and next.

Pakistan to seek bailout loan from IMF

Pakistan says it plans to enter talks with the IMF, about a bailout package. The country's new Prime Minister, Imran Khan, needs to tackle its multi-billion dollar trade deficit and currency crisis. Economists say the country needs about 12 billion dollars, which only the IMF is likely to be able to provide.

Second Skripal suspect named as a military doctor

The investigative website Bellingcat has named the second Russian suspect who Britain says poisoned the former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter with a nerve agent in England last March. Bellingcat says the real name of the man known as Alexander Petrov is Dr. Alexander Mishkin. It says he graduated from one of Russia's elite medical academies, and was recruited by Russian intelligence.

Don’t Smoke campaign gains almost 900,000 signatures

In Austria; the results of three public petitions, or Volksbegehren, have been released. The most successful was the Don't Smoke campaign, which calls for the government to implement a cancelled smoking ban. But it fell just short of 900,000 signatures - the figure the government had said could lead to a binding referendum. The public petition for women's equality received around 482,000 signatures - while the third, calling for the scrapping of the ORF licence fee, gained around 320,000.
