1953 veröffentlicht Louis Armstrong seine Autobiografie "My Life in New Orleans". Er ist 52 Jahre alt und der wohl berühmteste Jazzer der Welt. Obwohl jene Musik, mit der er groß geworden ist, und die er groß gemacht hat, längst Teil der Geschichte ist und modernere Strömungen wie Bebop und Cool Jazz die Szene beherrschen, gilt Armstrong für das breite Publikum immer noch als "Mister Jazz".
Vier Jahre nach der Autobiografie in Buchform folgt eine in Tönen. Das Besondere an der opulenten, vier LPs umfassenden Box "Satchmo: A Musical Autobiography":
Louis Armstrong erzählt hier aus seinem Leben und moderiert die Musikstücke richtiggehend an. Unter diesen finden sich erwartungsgemäß viele der bekannten Hits, von "Dipper Mouth Blues" über "Muskrat Ramble" und "Dear Old Southland" bis "When It's Sleepy Time Down South". Nicht alle der nun, 1957, neu aufgenommenen Versionen sind so gut wie die älteren, merkt der Plattentext zur CD-Wiederveröffentlichung kritisch an. Doch in der dreieinhalb Stunden dauernden "Musical Autobiography" finden sich immer noch genügend hervorragende Beispiele für Armstrongs Kunst: Da strahlt sein "sieghafter Trompetenton" (Joachim-Ernst Behrendt), da beeindruckt seine unverwechselbar tiefe, warme Stimme, da perlen Edmond Halls Klarinettenkaskaden, da swingt Billie Kyles Klavierspiel. Anlässlich des 50. Todestags von Louis Armstrong am 6. Juli 2021 sei dieses Unikum in seiner Diskografie aus dem Regal geholt.
