Banks remain closed in Cyprus
Officials in Cyprus have announced that all banks are now to be kept closed until Thursday, despite the bailout agreed with the European Union and IMF. Restrictions on transactions will be in place before banks open, to prevent mass withdrawals. Cypriot finance minister Michal Sarris has confirmed that big depositors could lose up to 40 percent of their funds as part of the rescue plan, with details being worked out today. “The exact percentage is not yet decided but it is going to be significant. I am afraid that people that have larger than 100,000 will have to exchange them for bank shares.” Meanwhile the chairman of the Bank of Cyprus, Andreas Artemis, has resigned.
