One million flee cyclone in Bangladesh

In southern Bangladesh, one million people have been evacuated because of a tropical cyclone. So far, 18 deaths related to the storm have been reported in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

Tornadoes sweep through Texas
In the United States, a series of tornadoes have swept through Texas. Six people have been killed in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. 14 other people are missing.

12 die in Iraqi bomb attacks

In Iraq, at least 12 people were killed today in Baghdad during two car bomb attacks on markets in Shi’ite neighborhoods. 30 others were wounded in the attacks. This comes one day after similar bombings in the city left 33 people dead.

NATO troops attacked in Afghanistan

NATO troops were the target of a suicide car bomb attack today in Afghanistan. Two NATO soldiers and four civilian contractors were killed when the bomber drove his car into a NATO convoy in the capital Kabul. 30 others were wounded. The militant group Hizb-e-Islami has claimed responsibility. The group opposes a foreign troops presence in Afghanistan, but is also a fierce rival to the Taliban.

Red Cross workers freed in Yemen

Three Red Cross workers kidnapped in Yemen on Monday have been safely released. The Red Cross has 200 employees in Yemen, including 50 international staff members.

Seven kidnapped in the Sinai

Seven Egyptian soldiers have been kidnapped by Islamist gunmen in the Sinai Peninsula. The gunmen are demanding the release of fellow militants currently in Egyptian jails.

HRW urges legal reforms in Hungary

Human Rights Watch is calling on the European Union to ensure Hungary changes its constitution and other laws to bring them in line with international norms on issues ranging from the independence of the judicial system to the rights of the homeless. Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his right-wing political allies have used their parliamentary majority to approve laws, including a new constitution, which some other EU members states have criticized as undemocratic.

Obama promises reform at IRS

US President Barack Obama says he will do what he can to prevent future abuses by tax collectors at the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS. The head of the agency, Steven Miller, resigned after it was revealed tax officials targeted the Tea Party and other conservative groups for special scrutiny. Now President Obama says new reforms are being put in place: “I’ll do everything in my power to make sure something like this never happens again. By holding the responsible parties accountable, by putting in place new checks and new safeguards, and going forward by making sure the law is applied as it should be in a fair and impartial way.”
