Europe tries to combat youth unemployment

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels have agreed to set aside around 8 billion euros to combat youth unemployment. Nearly six million people between the ages of 15 and 24 in the EU are without a job. Youth unemployment in Greece and Spain is close to 60 per cent, while in Italy and Portugal it´s over 40 per cent. The funding will form the basis of a "Youth Guarantee" that aims to provide a job, training or apprenticeship to young people.

Agreement on the EU´s seven-year budget

The EU has also reached an outline deal on the bloc's seven-year budget, which totals nearly one trillion euros and will cut real spending for the first time in its history. The spending plan for 2014 to 2020 received the unanimous support of all 27 member states.

Latvia to join the Eurozone

The summit also gave its backing to Latvia to become the 18th member of the Eurozone, with effect from January next year.

Bishop held in Vatican Bank inquiry

A senior Italian bishop has been arrested in connection with allegations of corruption and fraud at the Vatican bank. Monsignore Nunzio Scarano, who worked for the Vatican's financial administration, has reportedly been charged with embezzlement and money laundering. An Italian secret service agent and a financial broker have also been arrested.

US immigration reform moves forward

The United States Senate has passed a broad immigration reform bill that includes a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. The bill is backed by President Barack Obama, but is facing opposition in the House of Representatives, which is Republican controlled. House Speaker John Boehner: "I made it clear, I think we need a majority in both parties to support the passage of immigration reform, and to do that I have to facilitate a process and a discussion."

Retired US general in leaks probe

It´s being reported that one of the highest ranking military officers in the US is under investigation for allegedly leaking top secret information about a cyber attack on Iran's nuclear programme. Retired General James Cartwright is being investigated for leaking information on the covert computer virus Stuxnet. The virus was used in 2010 to temporarily disable 1,000 centrifuges used for enriching uranium at Iran's nuclear facilities.

Troops deployed ahead of Morsi anniversary

Troops have been deployed in the Egyptian capital Cairo and other cities, ahead of the first anniversary of Mohammed Morsi´s presidency. President Morsi's supporters are to hold "open-ended' rallies from Friday - two days ahead of opposition protests calling for the president to resign.
