Deaths rise in Latvia store collapse

Emergency workers in Latvia are continuing the search for survivors, after a roof collapsed at a busy supermarket in Riga on Thursday evening. 33 people died, including three fire-fighters, who were killed when large sections of roof fell on them during the search and rescue operation. Viktorija Sembele is the spokes-woman for the State Fire and Rescue service in Riga: "Now the main priority is to find persons who are still trapped there. But during the last hours we have found only dead persons." It´s understood a winter garden was being built on the supermarket´s roof and that construction regulations may have been violated.

London “slaves” freed after 30 years in captivity

A UK-based charity says that three women rescued from a house in south London after allegedly being held as slaves for 30 years were kept in "horrific conditions". The Freedom Charity alerted police after a call from one of the women. A married couple in their late 60s were arrested and later released on bail.

Ukraine suspends cooperation with Europe

The Ukrainian government has suspended plans for a deal on closer integration with the European Union. The EU had made the deal dependent on the release of Ukraine's former Prime Minister, Julija Tymoschenko, from prison - a move rejected by the parliament in Kiev on Thursday. The decision has been criticised by the United States, European leaders and the Ukrainian opposition.

UN climate talks enter final day

Hundreds of environmental activists walked out of UN climate change talks in the Polish capital, Warsaw, on Thursday. They expressed their deep disappointment at the lack of results, with just one day remaining.

World powers struggle on Iran nuclear deal

Iran and six world powers have reportedly made some progress towards an interim deal which would see Tehran restrict uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. But negotiators have downplayed anticipation of an imminent breakthrough in the three-day talks that began on Wednesday in Geneva.

The US remembers JFK 50 years on

The 50th anniversary of the assassination of the US President John F. Kennedy is being marked by solemn events in cities across the country. In Dallas, where Kennedy was shot while being driven through the city on November 22, 1963, thousands are expected to attend a special ceremony. President Barack Obama will also meet at the White House with leaders and volunteers from the Peace Corps programme established by Kennedy in 1960.
