Double attack on Yemen´s defence ministry

A suicide car bomb followed by a gun battle at the defence ministry in Yemen´s capital, Sanaa, have left up to 40 people dead and many others injured. Officials say the situation is now under control. Yemeni security forces are fighting regional rebels and al-Qaeda, while combating rising lawlessness and divisions in the army.

More violence in CAR capital

Heavy gunfire is being reported in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. The violence came hours before the United Nations Security Council is set to authorize increased military action by African and French troops, amid growing sectarian violence across the country. Gérard Araud is the French ambassador to the UN: "The problem is, you know, an ignored crisis. We the French, because we are the colonial power, we know Central African Republic. We have spent several months trying to mobilise the international community. In a sense we have waited too much."

Former presidents support Ukraine protests

Ukraine's three previous post-Soviet presidents have given their support to mass protests against the government's decision not to sign an association deal with the European Union. Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko expressed their solidarity with what they called the peaceful civil actions of hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians.

Thai King appeals for stability

The King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, has used his annual birthday speech to call for stability and unity. Celebrations are taking place under a truce, following days of violent clashes between anti-government demonstrators and police.

Mexican police find stolen radioactive material

Mexican police have found a stolen truck that was carrying dangerous radioactive material close to where it was stolen outside Mexico City. Mexico´s National Nuclear Security commission says the container containing the material was found open and that whoever opened it has been exposed to lethal doses of radiation.

French MPs back new prostitution law

The French parliament has formally endorsed a controversial new bill which would impose a 15 hundred euro fine on anyone paying for sex with a prostitute. Supporters of the bill say it punishes clients and better protects prostitutes, but critics argue it puts sex workers at more risk.

Northern Europe braces for Hurricane “Xaver”

Gale-force winds have hit Scotland, leaving thousands of homes without electricity, as much of northern Europe braces for a storm that´s expected to bring flooding to coastal areas and disruption to air, road and rail transport. Hurricane Xaver is fast approaching Northern Germany, with winds of up to 140 kilometres per hour. The storm flood is expected to hit Bremen and Hamburg early Friday.
