Suspected revenge killing in Jerusalem

Clashes have broken out in east Jerusalem between Israeli police and Palestinians after the discovery of the body of a Palestinian teenager who was reportedly kidnapped overnight. Police are investigating whether his killing may have been in revenge for the abduction and murder of three Jewish teenagers in the occupied West Bank, whose funerals were held yesterday. There are concerns tensions may escalate further at the funeral of the Palestinian teenager expected later today.

ISIS demands allegiance

The Sunni militant group ISIS has demanded that other rebel groups pledge allegiance to the state it has proclaimed in areas under its control in Iraq and Syria. Tribal and rebel military sources in the Iraqi city of Mosul say after two days of talks ISIS leaders have demanded all other groups disarm.

Syrian chemical weapons in Italy

Much of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile has arrived at the port of Gioia Tauro in southern Italy aboard a Danish ship, under tight security. Hundreds of tons of chemical weapons, including mustard gas and the raw materials for sarin nerve gas, are being transferred to a US ship, to be taken out to sea and destroyed.

Ebola outbreak in West Africa

The World Health Organisation is holding an emergency meeting in Ghana with West African health ministers to try to stop a rapidly-worsening outbreak of Ebola. More than 450 people have died in the epidemic. Dan Epstein from the W.H.O. says there is a shortage of experts to deal with the emergency: “We need epidemiologists, lab experts, clinical management experts, infection and prevention control people and we need risk communication teams.”

Sarkozy under formal investigation

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been placed under formal investigation on suspicion of corruption. Sarkozy and his lawyer allegedly used a senior judge as an accomplice to keep informed of investigations into whether he had received illegal funding for his election campaign in 2007.

Ukraine crisis meeting in Berlin

Foreign ministers from Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France meet today in Berlin to discuss the Ukrainian crisis. Clashes are continuing in east Ukraine after Kiev launched a new offensive against pro-Russian rebels.

“Decisive” Iran talks begin

The sixth and possibly decisive round of talks over Iran's nuclear programme resumes in Vienna today. Negotiators from the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany and Iran have until July 20th to strike a final deal meant to end international concerns Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons in exchange for easing economic sanctions.
