New Israel warning to Gaza residents

Israel has warned tens of thousands of Palestinians in northern and eastern Gaza to leave their homes, as it vows to expand its military operations in the territory. The warning came after an Egyptian proposal for a truce failed to stop Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel. Palestinian officials say Israeli raids have killed over 200 people in the past week. Israel has reported its first fatality. Richard Haass is the president of the Council on Foreign Relations: "I believe the chances for an Israeli ground effort - maybe not an occupation, but some kind of significant incursion or campaign - I would argue the odds of that have gone up significantly."

Assad sworn in as Syria´s president

Bashar al-Assad has been sworn in for a third, seven-year term as Syrian president, more than three years into the country´s civil war. The election was dismissed as a sham by Assad's opponents.

Hague Court rules on Srebrenica deaths

A court in the Netherlands has ruled that the Dutch government was partly responsible for the deaths of some of the thousands of Bosnian Muslims massacred at Srebrenica in 1995. Relatives of the victims had sued the government over the failure of Dutch UN peacekeepers to prevent the killings by Bosnian Serb forces.

Assange arrest warrant to be lifted?

A court in Sweden meets shortly to decide whether to lift the international arrest warrant against the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Facing extradition to Sweden for alleged sexual offences in 2010, he took refuge at Ecuador´s Embassy in London. He was granted political asylum by Ecuador and is living in the Embassy.

EU summit decides on top jobs

European Union leaders meet in Brussels later today for a special summit to decide who should be appointed to two top EU jobs. The EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and the European Council president Herman Van Rompuy are set to step down in November. The summit comes a day after the European Parliament confirmed Jean-Claude Juncker as the new president of the European Commission.

Moscow metro workers arrested after crash

Russian investigators have announced the arrest of two Moscow metro workers for safety breaches after a train derailed on Tuesday, killing 21 people. Over 160 others were injured. The track supervisor and his assistant are suspected of using inadequate wiring during works on the line.

Typhoon claims 12 lives in the Philippines

At least 12 people have been killed in a typhoon in the Philippines, which shut down the capital, Manila, and forced the evacuation of more than 370,000 people.
