UN condemns deadly attack on Gaza school
The United Nations has condemned an attack on school in the Jebaliya refugee camp in Gaza which killed at least 16 Palestinians. 3,000 people had reportedly been sheltering inside the school. Dozens were wounded. The Israeli military says it is investigating the reports. At least 1,200 Palestinians and 55 Israelis have been killed since the start of the Israeli offensive. As the fighting continues, Palestinian factions are expected to meet in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to discuss plans for a humanitarian ceasefire.
EU and US expand Russia sanctions
The United States has followed the European Union in announcing new sanctions against Russia, in the strongest international action yet over Moscow's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. President Barack Obama says Russia´s energy, banking and defence sectors will be targeted: "We´re blocking the export of specific goods and technologies to the Russian energy sector. We are expanding our sanctions to more Russian banks and defence companies, and we´re formally suspending credit that encourages exports to Russia and financing for economic development projects in Russia." Relations between Russia and the West worsened dramatically after the downing of Malaysian flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine. Dutch officials say experts have again been unable to reach the crash site because of continued fighting in the area.
Dozens trapped in Indian landslide
It is being reported that a landslide has hit a village in western India following torrential rains, sweeping away scores of houses and burying more than 150 people. Rescue workers are being hampered by continuing rains and poor roads leading to the village in Maharashtra state, where about 40 houses have been buried.
Guinea concert stampede leaves 33 dead
At least 33 people have been killed in a stampede at a beachside concert celebrating the end of Ramadan in Guinea's capital, Conakry. The country´s Presidency has declared a week of mourning.
Turkish women in laugh protest
Hundreds of Turkish women have posted pictures of themselves laughing on Twitter in protest at comments by Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc who had urged women not to laugh in public to "protect moral values". Opponents accuse the government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of ruling in an increasingly authoritarian manner.
Last Hiroshima bomb crewman dies
The last surviving member of the US air crew that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima has died in Georgia aged 93. Theodore Van Kirk was 24 when he became the navigator of the Enola Gay, the aircraft which dropped the bomb. The attack on Japan in 1945 killed an estimated 140,000 people.
