Israel calls up 16,000 extra reserves
Israel is calling up 16,000 extra military reserves as the conflict in Gaza continues. The move comes as Israel pledged to investigate a strike on a United Nations run school that killed at least 16 people. The United States and the UN have condemned the attack. UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Elliason: "We are talking about artillery attacks by Israel but we must also talk about the rockets going into Israel. But if you see the result of the violence used there is an enormously disproportionate effect."

Russian aviation experts have reportedly arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, ahead of a visit to the crash site of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 with international colleagues. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has ordered Russia to pay 1.9bn euros to former shareholders in the defunct oil giant Yukos.
