Iran demands end to airstrikes in Yemen
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has called for an end to airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition against Houthi rebels in Yemen, and for broad-based talks on resolving the crisis. Iran yesterday dispatched two naval vessels to the Gulf of Aden, off the southern coast of Yemen. United States secretary of state John Kerry has warned Iran over its alleged support for the Houthi rebels: “We’re well aware of the support that Iran has been giving in Yemen. And Iran needs to recognise that the United States is not going to stand by while the region is destabilised.”
No guarantee of Iran nuclear deal
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said he neither backs nor rejects an interim accord with six world powers on Tehran's nuclear programme. In a televised speech Khamenei demanded all sanctions be lifted immediately a final agreement is concluded.
Military action at Yarmouk planned
The Syrian government says it is preparing a military offensive in the Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus after Islamic State militants wrested control of around 80% of the camp from other rebel forces. The around 18,000 Palestinians still in the camp face catastrophic conditions.
French TV5 hacked
The French television network, TV5 Monde says it is trying to restore services after hackers claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group seized control of it last night. The network said its tv station, website and social media accounts were all affected. The hackers posted documents they said identified families of French soldiers involved in operations against Islamic State, and threats against the troops.
Greece repays IMF loan
Greece's government has given the order to repay a 450 euro million loan to the International Monetary Fund, which was part of its international bailout. Greece has not received any funds from its rescue loans since last August.
Tsarnaev may face death penalty
A jury in Boston in the United States has convicted Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on all charges in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. Three people were killed and over 260 others injured in the attack. The jury will now decide whether to sentence 21 year old Tsarnaev to death or life in prison.
Facebook hearing begins in Vienna
The first hearing is taking place in Vienna in a class action lawsuit case brought against Facebook by 25,000 users over alleged violations of European Union laws on privacy. The court must first decide whether the case can be heard under Austrian law.
Milan shootings at courthouse
In Milan three people including a judge have been killed in a shooting at the Palace of Justice. Police said the shots were fired by the defendant in a bankruptcy case. He has now been arrested.
