UN debates resolution on chemical attacks in Syria
The UN Security Council is expected to unanimously approve a resolution aimed at identifying those responsible for using chlorine and other chemical weapons in attacks in Syria that have killed and injured a growing number of civilians. While Russia and the United States disagree on a way to end the Syrian conflict, they have reached agreement on the text. The US has been pressing for the Security Council to ensure accountability for the growing number of alleged chlorine attacks in Syria, many reportedly using barrel bombs dropped from helicopters.
Dozens of Christians abducted by IS in Syria
Islamic State militants have reportedly abducted some 60 Christians after seizing a strategically located town in the central Syrian province of Homs. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says they are among 230 people who were kidnapped.
Defiant Trump dominates first TV debate
Ten of the 17 candidates battling it out to become the Republican Party´s candidate for the US Presidency have taken part in their first televised debate, hosted by Fox News. The frontrunner Donald Trump refused to rule out an independent bid for the White House. Ohio Public Radio journalist Karen Kessler was watching the debate: "We are used to these candidates coming up and falling off. Right now Donald Trump is in the lead. He´s been in the lead for a while. There are a lot of people who don´t expect him to hold on to that. We´ll have to see at this point."
French aid worker freed in Yemen
The French presidency has announced that a French aid worker who was taken hostage in Yemen in February has been freed and is expected home this evening. Isabelle Prime was freed on Thursday night. Details of her release weren't divulged.
Search widens for MH370 debris
France is to conduct air, land and sea searches in and around the island of Reunion in the hope of finding more debris which could be linked to the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. The Boeing 777 disappeared in March 2014 with 239 people on board.
Many casualties in Kabul truck bombing
Afghan officials say that eight people have been killed and some 400 were injured by a powerful truck bomb in the capital, Kabul. Security sources say the target was probably an army compound.
