US & China call for N Korea resolution

The US Secretary of State John Kerry says that he has agreed with China´s Foreign Minister Wang Yi about the need to reach a consensus on a "strong" United Nations resolution against North Korea. Speaking after meeting Wang in Beijing, Kerry said the United States and other members of the UN Security Council were obliged to take action after the nuclear test by North Korea earlier this month: "North Korea poses an overt threat, a declared threat, to the world and it has stated its intention to develop a thermo-nuclear weapon, and the United States will do what is necessary to protect the people of our country and our friends and allies in the world."

More uncertainty for Syria peace talks

One of the major opposition groups in Syria says it will only attend the Geneva peace talks if the sieges in the country are lifted and other conditions are met, casting further uncertainty on the talks scheduled to begin on Friday.Expectations are already low for any breakthroughs.

Iran´s president visits Paris

The Iranian president Hassan Rouhani begins a visit to France today on the second leg of his state visit to Europe, after three days in Italy. He´s expected to secure valuable trade deals following the lifting of international sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme. Rouhani will also meet the French President Francois Hollande.

French minister resigns amid terrorism row

The French Justice Minister Christiane Taubira has resigned, hours before parliament is due to debate plans to strip people convicted of terrorism of their citizenship. Taubira, one of France's few senior black politicians, was known to disagree with the controversial proposals. They were put forward after the attacks in Paris in November in which 130 people died.

UN criticises Denmark over refugee valuables

The United Nations has criticised the Danish parliament for approving plans to confiscate asylum seekers' valuables to cover the cost of their food and housing. MPs also agreed to delay family reunions. A spokesman for the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said refugees had put their lives at risk and should be treated with compassion and respect.

Danish man tests positive for Zika virus

A Danish man who returned from a trip to Mexico and Brazil has reportedly tested positive for the Zika virus, but health officials say he is recovering well and is expected to be released from hospital soon. The virus, which is transmitted by mosquitos, has been linked to rare brain defects in thousands of babies in Brazil.
