UN warns on refugees in Greece

The United Nations refugee agency has warned that conditions among refugees in Greece are deteriorating, with people sleeping in the open on the island of Lesbos and not receiving enough food. There are also reports of rioting and injuries on Samos. The UN has called for urgent support from the European Union to process asylum claims in Greece. It also said safeguards must be in place before migrants are returned to Turkey under an agree2ment with the EU. Returns are due to begin from Greece on April 4th.

AI accuses Turkey over refugees

Amnesty International has accused Turkey of forcibly returning hundreds of refugees to Syria since January in violation of international law. Turkey denies sending people back to Syria against their will.

North Korea launches missile

The South Korean military says North Korea has fired another missile into the sea, following its nuclear test in January, as United States president Barack Obama hosts a summit of world powers on global nuclear security in Washington. At the summit Obama said agreement had been reached between the US and China to try to prevent further tests by North Korea: “Of great importance to both of us is North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. President Xi and I are both committed to the de-nuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and full implementation of UN sanctions.”

Brussels airport may re-open

The company that runs the Brussels airport targeted in last month’s terror attacks says it is ready for a partial reopening. Airport police are demanding better security measures before services resume, and say they gave repeated warnings that security was inadequate before the attacks.

Investigation of Kolkata disaster opens

Police in India have opened a case of culpable homicide against the company building a flyover that collapsed yesterday in Kolkata, killing at least 24 people. More than 80 people were injured.

Protests in support of Rousseff

Tens of thousands of people in Brazil have joined protests against moves to impeach president Dilma Roussef. Meanwhile Brazil’s Supreme Court has ruled that it will take over a corruption investigation involving former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who said the judge pursuing the case was targeting him unfairly.

Germany’s Genscher dies

The former long-serving German interior and foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher has died at the age of 89. He also led the FDP.

Architect Hadid dies

The Iraqi-British, architect Zaha Hadid has died at the age of 65. Hadid became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, one of the world’s premier architecture awards.
