Wins for Trump and Clinton in New York
Donald Trump has won the Republican presidential primary in the crucial state of New York while Hillary Clinton has triumphed in the Democratic race, increasing the chances that they will face each other in the November election. Trump took around 60 per cent of the vote and told his supporters that his closest rival, Ted Cruz, can no longer catch up: "We don´t have much of a race any more. Senator Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated." Hillary Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders by a 15 per cent margin to extend her lead of pledged delegates: "The race for the Democratic nomination is in the home stretch and victory is in sight."
Ecuador relief efforts intensify
The UN World Food Programme, Oxfam and other leading aid agencies are stepping up relief efforts following Saturday's devastating earthquake in Ecuador, amid concerns over the conditions faced by survivors. The death toll from the 7.8-magnitude quake has risen to more than 500. Over 4,000 people were injured. Rescuers are losing hope of finding more survivors.
France may extend state of emergency
The French government is calling for a two-month extension of the state of emergency that was declared after last November´s attacks in Paris. The move, which will require parliamentary approval, is intended to cover the European Championship soccer tournament and the Tour de France.
Obama visits Saudi Arabia
President Barack Obama is beginning a visit to Saudi Arabia today. Relations between the US and Gulf countries are strained over the fight against the so-called Islamic State and the nuclear deal with Iran. As well as holding talks with King Salman, Obama will meet with leaders from Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
NATO-Russia talks resume
The NATO-Russia Council is meeting in Brussels for the first time in two years. High level talks between the 28 NATO countries and Russia were suspended following the Ukraine crisis and Moscow's annexation of Crimea.
Mitsubishi admits falsifying test data
The Japanese car maker Mitsubishi has admitted that fuel economy test data for more than 600,000 of its vehicles and those produced for Nissan had been falsified. The problem was uncovered after Nissan pointed out inconsistencies in emissions data. Mitsubishi then conducted an internal investigation. An independent panel has been set up to investigate. Mitsubishi shares closed down more than 15 per cent - their biggest one-day fall in nearly 12 years.
