Donald Trump set for Republican nomination
The US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has called on Republicans to unite behind him, after a convincing victory in Tuesday´s nominating contest in Indiana. His only serious rival, Ted Cruze, has pulled out of the race. Trump now has a clear path to the 1,237 delegates needed to claim his party's nomination. He says it´s time to win again: "We´ve been losing all the time. We lose with our military. We can´t beat ISIS. We lose with trade. We lose with borders. We lose with everything. We´re not gonna lose. We are going to start winning again and we´re gonna win big." Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton in Indiana's Democratic primary and says the contest is still alive. But Clinton has already secured over 90 per cent of delegates.
Emergency UN meeting on Aleppo fighting
The UN Security Council has scheduled an urgent meeting to discuss Aleppo, Syria's second city, where heavy fighting threatens to unravel peace efforts. Britain and France called the meeting in New York. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that efforts are under way to agree on a freeze in fighting in Aleppo.
EU to support visa-free travel for Turks
The European Commission is expected to recommended visa-free travel in the Schengen zone for Turkish citizens today. The proposal will then be presented to the European Parliament and national leaders at a summit in June. It´s part of a deal to stem the number of refugees and migrants attempting to cross into Europe. EU sources say that Turkey has not yet met all of the 72 “benchmarks” it has been set in return for visa liberalisation.
Pegida leader convicted of inciting racial hatred
The founder and leader of the German anti-Islam movement, Pegida, has been convicted of inciting racial hatred. Lutz Bachmann was fined 9,600 euros for calling refugees "scum." Bachmann had denied being behind the offending Facebook post.
Wildfire forces mass evacuation in Canada
The Canadian province of Alberta has appealed for military help to battle an uncontrolled wildfire that is taking hold in the heart of the country´s oil sands region. Authorities have issued a mandatory evacuation order for the entire population of the city of Fort McMurray, which is home to 80,000 people.
Strict tobacco ruling by top EU court
The European Court of Justice has upheld a tough EU law on standardising cigarette packaging and banning the advertising of e-cigarettes, paving the way for its adoption later this month. The Court rejected a legal challenge brought by Philip Morris and British American Tobacco.
