US Senate rejects gun control bills
The US Senate has failed to reach agreement on tighter gun controls following the mass shooting earlier this month at a gay nightclub in Florida which left 49 people dead. 4 different plans were considered. Democratic and Republican senators voted along party lines. The Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte called on the Senate to find a better compromise: "this is a gravely serious issue that requires a serious response. And there is a solution here - and I'm committed to finding it. Let's put aside the gamesmanship and come together to get a proposal that will be effective and get a result for the American people."

A British man accused of trying to assassinate Donald Trump has appeared in court in Las Vegas. Investigators said 20-year old Michael Sandford told them he went to a rally held by the Republican presidential hopeful last week-end with the intention of shooting him. He's alleged to have grabbed a police officer's gun.
Anti-Maduro petition in Venezuela
The opposition in Venezuela says a petition for a referendum to remove President Nicolas Maduro from office has drawn 70,000 people so far. Around 200,000 valid signatures are needed for the process to go ahead. Maduro's term runs until 2019, but the opposition says his policies are to blame for inflation and food shortages. Opposition politician Marialbert Barrios says Venezuelans will keep pushing for a referendum: "we're going to manage this. We won't be stopped by fear or doubt. The opportunity for a better life is in our hands. The opportunity to be able to decide who governs us and who doesn't is in our hands."
