Man dies in new US police shooting

Video has emerged in the US of another fatal shooting of a black man by police, the second such incident in 48 hours. The latest shooting took place in the city of Minneapolis. According to his partner Lavish Reynolds who witnessed the incident, Philando Castile was pulled over because of a broken light on his car and had told the officer that he had a gun which he was licensed to carry. She said he was shot as he reached for his wallet. The US Justice Department had earlier opened an investigation into the shooting by police of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge in Louisana following a scuffle with two officers outside a shop. Hundreds of people have taken part in a protest following his death. Baton Rouge Police spokesman Carl Dabadie says the investigation will be comprehensive: "we will be comprehensive in taking into account any and all evidence, including full audio and video from both officers' body cameras, dashboard cameras and any other video that we have obtained."

NATO summit in Poland

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel says that Russia's conflict with Ukraine has deeply unsettled NATO's eastern European member states. Addressing the German Parliament ahead of a NATO summit, she also said she wants to see a constructive relationship between Russia and NATO. The two-day conference is being held in the Polish capital Warsaw.

2 killed in Bangladesh attack

There's been an attack in northern Bangladesh where worshippers were holding a celebration to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Reports suggest bombs went off and that police were attacked at a security check point. Two policemen and one of the attackers were killed.

Bodies recovered from 2015 boat tragedy

The Italian navy says 217 bodies have been recovered from the wreck of a migrant boat that sank in the Mediterranean in April of last year killing around 500 people. The ship was raised from the seabed last week and the authorities have been working to remove and identify the bodies.

Flood control operations in China

More troops and police have joined the effort to support flood control and disaster relief in eastern China in areas battered by a week of heavy rain storms. More than 180 people have died as a result of the severe weather. The floods have destroyed houses and roads. Water levels are now starting to recede.

Taiwan braces for typhoon

Taiwan is bracing itself for the arrival of a typhoon which has winds of over 200 kilometres per hour. Thousands of tourists have been evacuated from offshore islands ahead of Typhoon Nepartak.
