Trump accepts Republican Party nomination

The billionaire businessman Donald Trump has officially accepted the Republican Party presidential nomination, promising safety and security to Americans and suggesting the world they live in is more dangerous than ever before. He said law and order would be restored as he addressed delegates and supporters at the national convention in the US city of Cleveland for more than an hour. Trump also said he would tackle illegal immigration and put the United States first: "We must immediately suspend immigration from any nation that has been compromised by terrorism. Until such time as proven vetting mechanisms have been put in place, we don´t want them in our country."

Five suspects charged over Nice truck attack

French prosecutors say the man who killed 84 people when he ploughed a lorry into crowds in Nice had planned the attack for months. Four men and a woman who are in police custody have been charged with terrorism related offences for their alleged roles in helping Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel in the Bastille Day attack. The evidence is said to include text messages, over 1,000 phone calls and a video of the attack scene.

EU warns Turkey over crackdown

The Turkish parliament has formally approved a 3-month state of emergency, giving President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers to expand the government crackdown following the failed coup. Ankara has also announced plans to suspend the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Union says it´s watching developments closely and with concern. Over 10,000 people have now been formally arrested.

Search for MH370 may be suspended

Malaysia, China and Australia have announced that the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will be suspended if the plane is not found in the current search area. The aircraft, with 239 people on board, disappeared in March 2014 during a flight from the Malaysian capital to Beijing. Around $135 million has been spent on the underwater search spanning 120,000 square kilometres in the southern Indian Ocean.

Karadzic appeals against genocide conviction

The former Bosnian Serb President Radovan Karadzic has filed a lengthy appeal against his conviction on genocide and other charges. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia sentenced Karadzic to 40 years in prison.
