Clinton nominated for US presidency

In the United States, Hillary Clinton has been officially nominated by the Democratic Party as its presidential candidate in November's election, the first woman to be nominated for the presidency by a major party. Among the speakers at the party’s convention in Philadelphia, her husband, former president Bill Clinton made a forceful case for her election: “For this time, Hillary is uniquely qualified to seize the opportunities and reduce the risks we face, and she is still the best darn change-maker I have ever known.” After she was nominated, Clinton spoke to the convention via videolink. “If there are any little girls who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, I may become the first woman president but one of you is next.” Clinton will give her acceptance speech at the convention tomorrow night. President Barack Obama addresses the gathering tonight.

Meanwhile it’s been revealed that one of extremists involved had been released from detention despite prosecutors’ protests and was under police monitoring with an electronic tag at the time of the attack.
