In her acceptance speech in Philadelphia, she said that her Republican rival Donald Trump had neither the character nor the experience to hold the office. Clinton is the first woman to be nominated for the post by a major party in the US. She told the Convention that November's election would be a "moment of reckoning" and that she accepted the nomination: "and so my friends it is with humility, determination and boundless confidence in America's promise that I accept your nomination for President of the United States."

Russia, a close ally of the Syrian government, has announced that 3 routes will be opened for civilians and unarmed rebels and a fourth for armed rebels. Earlier this week, the UN said that food supplies in the city were expected to run out by the middle of August.
