Republicans repudiate Trump

In the United States, fifty leading national security experts from the Republican party have repudiated their party’s candidate for the presidential election, Donald Trump. In an open letter they said Trump if elected would be the most reckless president in American history, and that he lacked the character, values and experience to be commander in chief. Trump has hit back, calling them a failed Washington elite responsible for the mess the world is in. Sohrab Ahmari from the Wall St Journal says the criticism won’t affect Trump’s core support: “As far as his core supporters go, who tend to be blue collar workers without a college degree, it won’t hurt a bit. Because that will look to them like more Washington elites talking down their noses at them and their candidate Trump.”

Erdogan meets Putin

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets Russian president Vladimir Putin for talks in St Petersburg today, their first meeting since a crisis in relations between the two countries following Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian plane on the border to Syria last November. Putin and Erdogan are expected to discuss the Syrian conflict, in which Turkey opposes Russian support for President Bashar Assad. The meeting comes amid tensions between Turkey and the West over Ankara's crackdown following last month’s failed coup.

UN calls for Aleppo truce

The United Nations has called for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in the Syrian city of Aleppo where infrastructure has been destroyed in the current escalation in fighting between a rebel alliance and government allied forces. It says two million residents of Aleppo have been left without access to running water or electricity, and that a truce is urgently needed to carry out repairs and bring aid into the city.

India activist ends lengthy hunger strike

One of India’s best known political activists Irom Sharmila is ending a 16 year hunger strike. She carried out the protest against sweeping powers given to the Indian army, allowing them to shoot to kill and granting them immunity from prosecution, in Manipur and other states.

Ethiopia protestors shot

Reports have emerged from Ethiopia that security forces shot dead more than 90 people during protests at the weekend. Demonstrators are demanding the release of jailed opposition politicians and protestors.

China warns Britain over Hinkley

China has warned Britain that relations between the two countries are at a crucial historical juncture following the British government's decision to delay approval of the multi-billion dollar Hinkley Point nuclear power station. Britain is thought to have ordered a review of the project over concerns about Chinese involvement in sensitive infrastructure.
