60 killed in attack on police academy in Pakistan

Officials in Pakistan say around 60 people have been killed in an attack on a police academy in the city of Quetta. The assault happened late last night. The Islamic State group says it was responsible, but officials are blaming another militant group Lash-kar e-Jhangvi. One police cadet who witnessed the attack told reporters what happened: "three or four militants came directly into our barracks. They just barged in and started firing point blank. We started screaming and running around in the barracks. Then I ran upstairs. They were all wearing masks."

Nearly 4,000 migrants have died at sea this year

The UN's refugee agency the UNHCR says nearly 3,800 refugees and migrants have died in the Mediterranean so far this year. A similar number of people lost their lives last year when three times as many people tried to use the route to reach Europe.

Clearance operations to begin at Calais camp

French police are preparing to start the next stage of its clearance of the refugee and migrant camp in Calais. More than 2,300 people left the camp voluntarily yesterday and were taken to refugee centres across France. That process is continuing today. Later teams will be sent in to dismantle the camp. Up to 8,000 people trying to reach the UK have been living there in squalid conditions. The French Ambassador to Britain Sylvie Bermann says the migrants will no longer be allowed to congregate at Calais: "we won't let them come. If they are refugees they will go to other centres and will be persuaded to claim asylum in France. The government is determined to stop people coming back to Calais. "

CETA signing not expected this week

The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz says he doesn't expect a free trade deal between the EU and Canada to be signed this week. Yesterday, Belgium said it couldn't formally back the accord known as CETA because one of its regions Wallonia is continuing to oppose it. Schulz says Thursday's signing ceremony with Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will probably have to be postponed but he added that he was optimistic that a solution would be found.

4 killed on theme park ride in Australia

Four people have been killed on a ride at a theme park on Australia's east coast. Two men and two women died on the "Thunder River Rapids" ride at Dreamworld which whisks visitors in circular rafts along a fast-moving artificial river. Investigations are underway.
