25 killed in Guatemala volcano eruption

The authorities in Guatemala have declared 3 days of mourning after a volcanic eruption killed at least 25 people. The Fuego volcano has spewed out a long stream of red hot lava as well as throwing out smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other areas. Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales: "we are going to suggest the need for a state of emergency. We have to see what parts of our legislation could help us get this. We think there could be devastation in at least 3 areas."

8 killed in Kabul bomb attack

A suicide bomber has killed at least 8 people near a large gathering of Afghan Muslim clerics in the capital Kabul. The clerics had gathered to call for peace and to denounce violence. There's been no immediate claim of responsibility.

Anti-immigration party wins Slovenia poll

In Slovenia, the anti-immigration Slovenian Democratic Party has emerged as the largest party following yesterday's general election, getting 25% of the vote. The party, which has been in opposition, is led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa who's been a vocal supporter of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Analysts say the party may find it difficult to form a coalition. But Jansa says he's open to dialogue: "the time ahead will need cooperation. Our door is open when it comes to dialogue - as has always been the case. We've always attracted those who want the best for Slovenia."

Greece eases capital controls

Greece has eased capital controls that were introduced three years ago when fears that the country could leave the Eurozone prompted a run on the banks. Among the measures are loosening the restrictions on the amount Greeks can withdraw from their bank accounts. Greece is preparing to leave its current bail-out programme in August.

Vladimir Putin to visit Austria

Preparations are underway for the Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Austria tomorrow. The working trip is the first to an EU country since his re-election in March. Ahead of the trip, the Russian leader gave the ORF an exclusive interview, to be aired this evening, in which he discussed his country's relations with the EU and the US among other issues.

3 North Korean officers removed from their posts

Three of the highest-ranking officers in the North Korean military are reported to have been removed from their posts in recent months. It's believed there had been some unease in the military over next week's planned summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and President Trump in Singapore.
