Seit Youssou als 16-Jähriger zum Sänger der "Star Band" wurde, mit 19 die Gruppe "Etoile de Dakar" gründete und den treibenden Mbalax-Stil kreierte, ist er der wichtigste Erneuerer der westafrikanischen Populärmusik. Heute ist der Ex-Kulturminister die kosmopolitische Stimme des Senegal. Seine Lieder waren stets soziale Botschaften zu Themen wie Schulbildung, Jugendprotest oder Religion.
