Wenn ausgerechnet ein gebürtiger Deutscher auszieht, um die Traditionen der US-amerikanischen Volksmusik in all ihrer Vielfalt und all ihren Facetten zu entdecken, zu erkunden und zu ergründen, dann hat das auch viele Vorteile: völlig frei von historisch gewachsenen Vorurteilen über Genregrenzen, soziale Klischees und Rassendenken, machte sich der 1931 in Niederschlesien geborene und nach dem Krieg mit seiner Familie in die USA emigrierte Chris Strachwitz ab 1960 zunächst daran, auf dem von ihm gegründeten Plattenlabel "Arhoolie Records" weitgehend unbekannte Bluesmusiker zu veröffentlichen und alte, bekannte wieder in Erinnerung zu rufen.
In seinen Musikrecherchen gelangte Strachwitz aber bald auch in völlig andere Musikbereiche und kam vom Hundertsten ins Tausendste: Gospel, Cajun- und Zydeco-Musik, Country, Texmex oder die "Sacred Steel"-Szene - so ziemlich alles, was mit dem so treffenden Wort "Roots" beschrieben werden kann, fand über die Jahre Eingang in den reichhaltigen Katalog von Arhoolie. Und viele dieser bekannten und weniger bekannten Musiker und Musikerinnen fanden sich auch mit Begeisterung wieder ein, als das Label zu seinem 50. Geburtstag im Februar 2011 zu einem dreitägigen Jubiläumskonzert lud und Strachwitz stolz verkünden konnte: "They all played for us!"
